I'm Ajie, and in 2025 I successfully transitioned from a traditional manufacturing company to a Data Operations role at Tencent PCG (Platform & Content Group). After 4 years in the traditional industry, the switch required significant courage — especially at age 28 when peers were advancing in their established careers. This is my story, shared freely for anyone considering a similar path.
Why Data Operations?
After researching multiple roles (PM, user ops, content ops), I chose data operations because: transferable skills from traditional industry analytics, high demand across tech companies, clear entry requirements (SQL + data analysis), and a well-defined career growth path.
The 5-Month Preparation
Month 1: Built knowledge framework — internet operations theory, data analysis methodology (funnel analysis, retention analysis, user segmentation), and SQL basics.
Month 2: Intensive SQL training — completed 180 practice problems across 4 weeks, progressing from basic queries to window functions to business scenario questions on LeetCode and Nowcoder.
Month 3: Project portfolio building — translated traditional industry experience into tech language, created 3 data analysis reports and 2 methodology articles, built a simple data dashboard.
Month 4: Resume optimization and applications — applied to 15+ smaller companies first for practice, then targeted Tencent, ByteDance, and NetEase with internal referrals.
Month 5: Interview sprint — interviewed at 8 companies, received 3 offers, chose Tencent.
Advice for Career Switchers 28+
Age is not a barrier — tech companies value capability and potential. Your traditional industry experience is an asset, not a liability. Set a clear timeline to avoid indefinite procrastination. Prepare financially for a 3–6 month income gap. And maintain physical exercise and social connections — mental health during career transitions matters just as much as skills development.
